How can you be Pro-Life and Pro-War?

Abortion Stops a Beating HeartOne of the great conundrums of the current political-philosophical alignments in the US is that people who are vociferously pro-life when it involves abortion, rally in support of the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in the name of American Imperialism. These are the people who gladly sing along with the vile, bellicose, murderous lyrics of Toby Keith one day, and protest abortion clinics the next.

Those who argue that abortion stops a beating heart seem to forget that the bombs we drop from thousands of feet in the air have the same effect. As a human being and a Christian, I have no tolerance for either.

Thomas Woods, one of my favorite historians, expounded on this idea in his article Pro-Lifers for Murder. He makes a great case about the hypocrisy of those who think that the correct “pro-life” position is to vote for someone who sings about bombing Iran. From the article:

There are people who spend their time arguing that being “pro-life” this year means voting for an obtuse ignoramus who thinks it’s a laugh riot to sing, “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.” A savage who jokes gleefully about the inevitable creation of widows and orphans – that’s the person the official pro-life movement wants as its public face for four years. Gee, a coherent, non-contradictory message like that is just the way to win people over.

Someone much greater than I once said “blessed are the peacemakers” but these days, those who claim to follow him don’t seem to care much for making peace.
